River Otters Sighted In Red Feather Lakes, Colorado!!!

With River Otter Sightings rare in Larimer County it has been good to see them with frequency the last few months. This could indicate a growth in River Otter populations and expansion of their range!!! River Otters are part of the Mustelidae (Weasel) family.

The Mustelidae Family?

Members of the Mustelidae (Weasel} Family include

River Otters, Weasels, Mink, Marten, Ferrets,  Stoats, Fisher, Wolverines, Badgers and many more. Their are about 70 recognized species in this family, making them the largest family in the order Carnivora.

Family Behavior

Their are big differences in behavior between species. For example River Otters live in social structures while American Badgers live in solitary. Although their is a lot of variety in a family this big their are many common similarities. Most are strictly carnivorous, very active, and inquisitive.

Personally speaking sighting a Mustelidae can be difficult, if you are lucky enough to see one you are in for a treat. Their curiosity, and energy makes them my favorite family of wildlife to photograph! Browse around and I hope you leave loving them as much as I do!
